Austin is blessed with gorgeous parks, tree-lined trails, and golden-hour light that makes outdoor cake smash sessions truly magical. But Texas weather has its own ideas, so choosing the right location and the right time of year matters. Here is our guide to the best outdoor spots in the Austin area — plus the seasonal know-how to make it work.
Best Parks and Locations
Zilker Park
Austin's most iconic park has plenty of shaded spots under mature pecan and live oak trees. The Zilker Botanical Garden area offers beautiful backdrops with curated plantings that look stunning in photos. Our favorite spots are along the southern edge near the springs, where dappled light filters through the canopy. Parking can be tight on weekends, so weekday morning sessions work best here.
Mueller Lake Park
Mueller is a hidden gem for portrait sessions. The lake provides a beautiful reflective backdrop, the landscaping is immaculate, and the open green spaces give us room to spread out a setup without crowds walking through. The amphitheater area and the paths near the lake are both excellent. This is one of the easier parks for families with strollers and gear since parking is right next to the park.
Brushy Creek Regional Trail (Cedar Park / Round Rock)
For families in the northern suburbs, Brushy Creek is outstanding. The creek areas with limestone rocks create a naturally textured, earthy backdrop that looks beautiful in photos without any decorations at all. The tree coverage is excellent, providing shade even during warmer months. There are multiple access points along the trail, so we can find a quiet, private-feeling spot easily.
Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail
The Boardwalk section of the Lady Bird Lake trail offers water views and downtown skyline peeks that give outdoor sessions a uniquely Austin feel. Early morning sessions here — before the runners and cyclists take over — are peaceful and the light is incredible. The areas near the Rainey Street trailhead and the I-35 underpass murals both offer distinct vibes.
Commons Ford Ranch Metropolitan Park
This lesser-known park in west Austin sits along the shores of Lake Austin and has wide open meadows framed by mature trees. The golden fields in late fall are particularly photogenic. It is quieter than Zilker and rarely crowded, which means less interruption and more privacy for your session.
Your Own Backyard
Honestly, one of the best outdoor locations is often your own backyard. Here is why:
- Baby is in familiar territory and more relaxed
- No park permits or public interruptions
- Easy access to the house for cleanup, diaper changes, and nap emergencies
- You can set up decorations however you like without worrying about park rules
- If things go sideways, you are already home
Even a small patch of grass with a fence backdrop can produce beautiful results. We bring our own reflectors and know how to work with whatever light your yard provides.
When to Book an Outdoor Session
This is Texas, so timing matters enormously. Here is our honest seasonal breakdown:
Best months for outdoor sessions: October, November, March, and April. Temperatures are manageable, the light is golden, and the greenery is at its best.
Workable with planning: September (early morning only), December through February (mild winter days).
Avoid outdoor sessions: June through August. Austin regularly hits 100+ degrees, and even morning sessions can be dangerously hot for a baby sitting in direct or indirect sunlight. We strongly recommend indoor sessions during summer months.
Time of Day
For outdoor sessions, we shoot during the golden hour — the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset. In Austin, that means:
- Spring/Fall: Morning sessions around 7:30-8:30 AM, or evening sessions around 5:30-6:30 PM
- Winter: Morning sessions around 8:00-9:00 AM, or evening sessions around 4:30-5:30 PM
Midday sun in Texas is harsh, creates squinting, and produces unflattering shadows under the eyes. We never schedule outdoor sessions between 11 AM and 3 PM regardless of the season.
Outdoor Session Logistics
What to Bring
- A blanket or mat for baby to sit on (we can work this into the styling)
- The cake in a cooler — Texas heat and buttercream frosting do not mix. Keep the cake cold until the moment we are ready to shoot
- Bug spray for parents (we will keep it away from baby and the cake area)
- A pop-up shade canopy if the spot does not have natural tree cover (optional — we can advise)
- Extra water and wet wipes
- A trash bag for cleanup — we always leave parks cleaner than we found them
Weather Backup Plan
Texas weather is famously unpredictable. If rain is in the forecast, we will reach out 24 hours before your session to discuss options. You can reschedule at no cost, or we can pivot to an indoor session at your home. We have done this many times and the indoor results are always beautiful.
Outdoor Spots by Suburb
If you are outside central Austin, here are our top picks closer to home:
- Round Rock: Old Settlers Park, Brushy Creek Lake Park
- Cedar Park: Veterans Memorial Park, Brushy Creek Regional Trail
- Pflugerville: Lake Pflugerville, Pfluger Park
- Georgetown: San Gabriel Park, Blue Hole Park
- Lakeway / Bee Cave: Hamilton Greenbelt, Bee Cave Central Park
