One of the first decisions Austin parents face when booking a cake smash session is: inside or outside? Both options produce beautiful photos, but they create very different looks and come with different considerations — especially in Texas. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

The Case for Indoor Sessions

About 70% of our Austin cake smash sessions happen indoors, and there are good reasons for that.

Consistency and Control

Indoor sessions give us the most control over the environment. We can position baby near the best window for light, control the temperature so everyone is comfortable, and set up decorations exactly how you want them without worrying about wind knocking over balloons. The results are reliably excellent because we are working in predictable conditions.

Baby Comfort

This is the biggest advantage. A baby in their own home is a relaxed baby. They know the space, they feel safe, and they are more likely to give us those genuine, joyful reactions we are looking for. There is no car ride to disrupt nap schedules, no unfamiliar grass under their legs, no strangers walking by. When baby is comfortable, the photos show it.

Practical Convenience

Everything you need is right there. Forgot to put out the cake? It is in the fridge. Baby needs a diaper change? Their room is down the hall. Frosting everywhere? The sink is ten feet away. The logistics of an indoor session are simply easier for everyone.

The Case for Outdoor Sessions

That said, outdoor sessions have a magic that is hard to replicate inside.

The Light

Golden hour light in Austin is extraordinary. That warm, amber glow in the hour before sunset creates a dreamy, almost painterly quality that window light simply cannot match. If you have ever seen a backlit portrait where the sun creates a halo around baby's hair, that is golden hour magic. It is why professional photographers obsess over it.

Natural Backdrops

Austin's parks offer backdrops that no amount of indoor decoration can replicate. Think towering live oaks, wildflower fields in spring, the reflecting surface of Mueller Lake, or the limestone textures along Brushy Creek. Nature adds depth and texture to photos that feels organic and timeless. Ten years from now, those photos will feel just as beautiful because trees and sky never go out of style.

A Sense of Adventure

There is something special about an outdoor session that feels like an event. Some families turn it into a mini outing — the cake smash at the park followed by a picnic. The outdoor setting adds variety to your photo set, too: we can capture wider environmental shots alongside close-ups of the cake smash itself.

The Texas Weather Factor

Let us be real: Texas weather is the single biggest factor in this decision. Here is our month-by-month guide:

January - February: Indoor preferred. Temperatures can drop into the 30s and 40s, and cold babies are unhappy babies. Some mild days work for outdoor, but it is unpredictable.

March - April: Excellent outdoor months. Temperatures in the 70s, bluebonnets blooming, gorgeous light. This is peak outdoor session season. Book early — these months fill up fast.

May: Getting warm. Early morning outdoor sessions still work. By midday, it is too hot.

June - August: Indoor only. Period. Temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees. Even morning sessions can be 85+ with brutal humidity. It is not safe or comfortable for a baby to be outside for a portrait session in a Texas summer. We will not book outdoor sessions during these months.

September: Transitioning. Late September can work for early morning outdoor sessions if temperatures cooperate. Check the forecast carefully.

October - November: Excellent outdoor months. Comfortable temperatures, beautiful fall light, and the foliage adds warm tones to backgrounds. Tied with March-April as our favorite outdoor season.

December: Hit or miss. Austin winters are mild compared to most of the country, and some December days are perfect for outdoor sessions. But cold fronts can drop temperatures suddenly. Indoor is the safer bet.

Which Should You Choose?

The Hybrid Option

Some families do both — and it is a great approach if time allows. We can start with a few portraits inside your home with the decorations, then move outside to a shaded area of your yard for the actual cake smash. This gives you variety in your gallery and you get the best of both worlds. The 30-minute session is enough time to do a quick location change if the second spot is right outside your door.

Not sure which option is right for your family? When you book your session, tell us about your home, your yard, and your baby's birthday timing. We will make an honest recommendation based on our experience with hundreds of Austin cake smash sessions. We have been doing this since 2009 — we know what works.
