One of the biggest perks of an on-location cake smash session is that your baby stays in a space they already know. No car seat meltdowns, no unfamiliar studio, no fighting nap schedules. But a little preparation goes a long way toward getting the best possible photos in your Austin home. Here is everything you need to know.
Choose the Right Room
Not every room in your house is going to work equally well for a cake smash session. Here is what to look for:
- Large windows facing north or east. North-facing windows give soft, even light all day long. East-facing windows are gorgeous in the morning before the harsh Texas sun climbs too high. Avoid south-facing windows at midday unless you have sheer curtains to diffuse the light.
- At least 6-8 feet of open floor space. We need room for the cake setup, baby, and enough distance for the camera to capture the scene without a wide-angle distortion that makes faces look odd.
- Light-colored walls. White, cream, or light gray walls bounce light beautifully and create a clean background. Dark accent walls can work but they absorb light, meaning we may lose some of that airy, bright look most parents love.
- Hard flooring preferred. If you have tile, wood, or laminate in a well-lit room, that is your best bet. Carpet can work, but frosting and crumbs are easier to manage on hard surfaces.
Living rooms and dining rooms tend to be the winners. Kitchens can work if they have good natural light and enough floor space once the table is moved aside.
Lighting Is Everything
Professional photography is fundamentally about light, and the quality of natural light in your home will have the biggest impact on your final images. Here is how to maximize it:
- Open all blinds and curtains on the window wall you are using. Sheer white curtains can stay — they actually help diffuse harsh sunlight into something more flattering.
- Turn off overhead lights. Ceiling lights cast downward shadows under the eyes and create an unflattering yellow or green color cast that fights with the natural light. We want the window light to be the dominant source.
- Morning sessions work best for east-facing rooms. If your best windows face west, consider an afternoon session instead. We will help you pick the right time when you book.
Protect Your Floors
Cake smashes are messy by design — that is what makes them fun. Here is how to protect your space:
- Lay down a plastic drop cloth or cheap vinyl tablecloth under the entire setup area. You can find these at Dollar Tree or H-E-B for a couple of dollars. Clear or white works best so it does not show in photos.
- Have a splash mat or old towel ready just outside the setup area for the immediate aftermath.
- Keep wet wipes within arm's reach — both for baby and for any frosting that escapes the drop cloth.
- If you have carpet, layer a waterproof mattress protector under the drop cloth for extra insurance against frosting soaking through.
We have done hundreds of these sessions and we promise — with a simple drop cloth, cleanup takes about five minutes.
Declutter the Background
You do not need a perfectly styled home. But the area directly behind where baby will sit should be as clean as possible. Here is a quick checklist:
- Move furniture that you don't want in the frame at least 4-5 feet back
- Remove visible cords, chargers, and electronics from the background
- Take down anything on the wall behind the setup that you do not want in photos (family photos, thermostats, light switches are fine — we can work around those)
- Clear the floor of toys, shoes, and pet items in the shooting area
A blank wall or a wall with minimal decor makes the best backdrop. Your birthday decorations — balloons, banners, garlands — will fill the space beautifully.
Set Up Your Decorations
Since you are providing the decorations for your Austin on-location session, here are some tips for what works photographically:
- Stick to 2-3 colors maximum. A cohesive color palette looks intentional and polished. Pastels photograph beautifully. Avoid neon — it reflects color onto baby's skin.
- Balloons are your best friend. A simple balloon arch or cluster behind baby creates instant atmosphere. Helium balloons on ribbons create height. A mix of sizes adds visual interest.
- Skip confetti and glitter. It ends up everywhere and the small pieces can be a choking hazard for babies.
- A high chair or small wooden chair works well if baby can sit in it confidently. Otherwise, the floor is perfect — we will have baby sit right in front of the cake.
- A simple banner or number "1" sign adds context without cluttering the scene.
Pro Tip: Set up your decorations at least 30 minutes before the session starts. This gives you time to adjust and means baby is not watching you scramble when we arrive. It also means their initial reaction to the setup is genuine — and those surprised faces are gold.
Prepare Your Baby
The best-looking photos happen when baby is well-rested and recently fed (but not stuffed). Here is our recommendation:
- Schedule the session after a nap when possible
- Give baby a light snack about 30 minutes before — a hungry baby dives into the cake faster, but an overtired hungry baby may just cry
- Dress baby in their outfit but keep it simple. A diaper cover, tutu, or simple romper works beautifully. Less clothing means less laundry and more adorable frosting-covered skin
- Have a change of clothes ready for after the session
What to Have on Hand
Here is a quick supplies checklist for session day:
- The cake (keep it refrigerated until 15-20 minutes before the session)
- Plastic drop cloth or vinyl tablecloth
- Wet wipes (a full pack)
- Change of clothes for baby
- A towel for quick cleanup
- Decorations set up and ready
- Baby's favorite small toy (in case we need to get their attention)
- A sippy cup of water nearby
That is it. You do not need to stress about having a magazine-ready home. We are professionals with over 15 years of experience, and we know how to work with real homes and real families. The goal is authentic joy — and that is easiest when everyone is comfortable in their own space.
