Blue Cake Smash Session in Chicago
Blue is one of the most requested color schemes we see at our Edgewater studio, and it is easy to understand why. From soft powder blue to bold royal blue, this color photographs beautifully under studio lighting and pairs naturally with white, silver, and gold accents.
This session is a perfect example of how a single color choice can pull an entire set together. The parents sent us a photo of their son's outfit a week before the session, and we built everything around that shade of blue.
How We Built This Blue Set
The foundation of every session starts with the outfit. For this one, the parents chose a classic look that let the blue theme shine. From there, we coordinated:
- The cake — Our baker tinted the frosting a rich blue that matched the overall palette without being so dark it would hide the mess (half the fun is watching the frosting fly).
- Balloons — A mix of blue and clear balloons at varying heights to add depth and movement to the frame.
- Banner and number sign — A simple birthday banner and a number one sign tied the celebration theme together without competing with the cake.
- Backdrop — We kept the background clean so the blue elements could pop.
Every element is coordinated to the same blue palette for a cohesive, polished look.
Why Blue Works So Well
Blue is a forgiving color in photography. It does not cast strong color onto skin the way red or orange can, and it holds detail in the frosting so you can actually see the texture of the smash. Lighter blues create a soft, dreamy feel. Deeper blues give a more editorial, bold result. Both look incredible.
Parents often ask if darker colors will look too heavy in photos. Under studio lighting, blue actually glows. It is one of our favorite colors to shoot.
Color Combinations That Work with Blue
If you love blue but want to add a second accent color, here are combinations we have seen work well in past sessions:
- Blue and white — Clean, classic, nautical feel. The most popular combination we see.
- Blue and silver — Adds a little sparkle without going over the top. Great with metallic balloons.
- Blue and gold — A richer, more luxe look. Works especially well with deeper blues.
- Blue and green — A natural, earthy palette that feels fresh and modern.
The best part of the session: the smash itself. Blue frosting photographs beautifully even when it is everywhere.
Planning Your Blue Cake Smash
If you are thinking about a blue theme for your baby's first birthday session, here is what to keep in mind:
- Pick your shade first. Baby blue, royal blue, and navy all create very different moods. Browse our session gallery to see which resonates with you.
- Send us the outfit early. The sooner we see it, the better we can match the cake and set pieces.
- Keep the outfit simple. A solid blue outfit lets us build a cohesive set. Patterns and logos compete with the cake for attention.
- Trust the process. We have been coordinating color-themed sessions since 2009. We will make it look beautiful.
