Teal and Mint Cake Smash Session in Chicago
Teal and mint have become one of the most popular color choices at our studio over the past few years. It is a color that works for any baby regardless of gender, photographs with incredible richness under studio lights, and feels fresh and modern without being trendy.
This session is a great example of how teal can carry an entire set. The parents wanted something that felt fun and celebratory but not stereotypically pink or blue, and teal delivered exactly that.
Setting the Scene
We started with the cake. Our baker created a teal-frosted smash cake that sat on a wooden crate — the natural wood texture against the teal was a nice contrast that kept things from feeling too monochromatic. From there, we added:
- Balloons — A cluster of teal and clear balloons at varying heights. The clear ones keep the set feeling airy rather than heavy.
- Birthday banner — A simple banner that picked up the teal without overwhelming the composition.
- Cake stand — A wooden crate that grounded the set and gave the scene a slightly rustic, organic feel.
The teal palette creates a fresh, gender-neutral look that photographs beautifully.
Why Teal and Mint Are Having a Moment
We have noticed a real shift in the past couple of years. More parents are moving away from traditional pink-for-girls and blue-for-boys and choosing colors based purely on what they love. Teal sits in that sweet spot — it has the depth of a jewel tone but the freshness of a pastel. It reads as intentional and styled without being stuffy.
Teal is the color parents choose when they want something that feels unique but not experimental. It always looks polished.
Teal vs. Mint: What Is the Difference?
We get this question a lot, and it matters because the two shades create very different moods:
- Teal — Deeper, richer, more saturated. It has a lot of blue in it and photographs with drama and depth. Best for parents who want a bold, editorial feel.
- Mint — Lighter, softer, more green. It creates a dreamy, pastel aesthetic that feels gentle and whimsical. Best for a delicate, airy look.
- Both together — Layering teal and mint in the same session creates dimension. The darker teal anchors the set while the lighter mint keeps it feeling light.
Teal frosting holds its color beautifully even mid-smash.
Styling Tips for a Teal Session
- Pair teal with neutrals. White, cream, and natural wood tones let the teal be the star without competing colors.
- Add gold for warmth. A gold number sign or crown adds just enough warmth to balance the cool teal tones.
- Keep the outfit simple. White, cream, or light gray outfits let the teal set pop. Avoid matching the outfit exactly to the set — a little contrast is more interesting.
- Consider the backdrop. Teal looks stunning against both light and dark backgrounds. We will help you decide based on the overall mood you want.
