Your baby's first birthday is approaching and you want to capture the milestone with a cake smash session. But when, exactly, should you book? How far in advance? Does it need to be on their actual birthday? And what if they are not quite sitting up yet?

Here is everything we have learned from photographing first birthday sessions since 2009 about timing your cake smash perfectly.

The Sweet Spot: 11 to 14 Months

The ideal age range for a cake smash session is 11 to 14 months. Here is why that window works so well:

Around 12 months, babies have the motor skills to truly interact with the cake — and every reaction makes for incredible photos.

Does It Need to Be on the Actual Birthday?

No, and in fact most sessions are not on the exact birthday. Our mini sessions happen on pre-scheduled weekend event days (typically Saturdays), so the session may fall a week or two before or after the actual birthday. This is completely fine. A baby at 11 months and 3 weeks looks the same as a baby at exactly 12 months.

Many families book the cake smash session for a weekend before the actual birthday and then use a few of the images for the birthday party invitations, decorations, or social media posts. It is a nice way to kick off the birthday celebrations.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

We recommend booking four to six weeks before your preferred session date. Here is why:

That said, last-minute bookings do happen. If there is an open slot on an upcoming event day, we will happily accommodate you even with short notice. Just email us and ask.

What If My Baby Is Not Sitting Up Yet?

If your baby is approaching their first birthday but is not yet sitting independently, it is usually better to wait a few weeks. We can absolutely work with babies who need a little support, but the best cake smash images come when the baby can sit upright and use both hands freely. A delay of two to four weeks at this age can make a big difference in developmental milestones.

Can You Do a Cake Smash for Older Toddlers?

Yes, absolutely. While the classic cake smash is a first birthday tradition, we have photographed cake smashes for second and even third birthdays. Older toddlers tend to be more enthusiastic (and more efficient) with the smashing, which makes for a different but equally joyful set of images. Just know that toddlers are faster, messier, and harder to contain — which honestly makes the photos even more fun.

Seasonal Considerations in Chicago

Chicago weather does not directly affect your cake smash session since we shoot in a climate-controlled studio. However, there are a few seasonal patterns worth knowing:

The Bottom Line

Book when your baby is between 11 and 14 months old, ideally four to six weeks before your preferred date. It does not need to be their exact birthday. And if you are reading this and thinking you are behind, check our upcoming dates — there may still be a spot waiting for you.
