Yellow and Gold Cake Smash Session in Chicago
There is something about yellow that radiates pure joy. It is the color of sunshine, warmth, and celebration, and it creates cake smash photos that feel alive with energy. When a baby is covered in bright yellow frosting, laughing and smashing with both hands, the images practically glow.
This session is one of our favorites because it shows how a warm color palette can transform a studio set into something that feels genuinely happy and inviting.
The Sunshine Setup
Yellow is a bold choice, and it needs to be handled thoughtfully so the set feels warm rather than overwhelming. Here is how we put this one together:
- The cake — A sunshine yellow frosted cake that was bright enough to pop on camera but soft enough to look appetizing. Our baker nailed the shade.
- Balloons — Yellow and white balloons in a loose cluster. The white balloons are important here — they give the eye somewhere to rest and prevent the set from feeling like a wall of yellow.
- Banner and number sign — A playful birthday banner and number one sign that added the celebration element without competing with the cake.
- Highchair — A vintage-style highchair that grounded the set and gave the baby a dedicated smash station.
Yellow frosting catches the studio light and creates images that feel warm and inviting.
Yellow vs. Gold: Choosing Your Shade
Yellow and gold create very different looks, and knowing the difference helps you get the session you are imagining:
- Bright yellow — Cheerful, playful, high-energy. Think sunshine and sunflowers. This is what we used in this session.
- Buttercream yellow — Softer, more muted. It creates a vintage, pastel feel that works beautifully with cream and white accents.
- Gold — Warm, metallic, luxurious. Gold is not a cake color (metallic frosting does not photograph well), but gold accents — a crown, number sign, or scattered confetti — pair beautifully with yellow cake.
Yellow is the happiest color we photograph. Every parent who chooses it tells us afterward that it was the right call. The images just radiate warmth.
Making Yellow Work in Winter
This session was shot in January, and that is actually one of the best times to choose yellow. When it is gray and cold outside, a sunshine-themed session feels like an antidote to winter. The warm tones in the images are especially striking when everything outside is muted and bare.
Seasonal cake smash themes we love with yellow:
- Sunshine birthday — "You Are My Sunshine" is one of the most popular first birthday themes, and yellow is the natural color for it.
- Bee theme — Yellow and black stripes, honeycomb details. Adorable with a yellow cake.
- Sunflower garden — Yellow with green accents and a natural, garden-inspired set.
- Lemon squeeze — Yellow with white and green for a fresh, summery look even in the dead of winter.
The joy is contagious. Yellow sessions produce some of our most energetic, expressive photos.
Tips for a Yellow Session
- Pair with white or cream outfits. The contrast between a clean outfit and the yellow set makes both pop.
- Add gold accents sparingly. A gold crown or number sign adds warmth without competing with the yellow cake.
- Avoid green outfits. Yellow and green together can look unintentional. Stick with neutrals for the outfit.
- Embrace the mess. Yellow frosting on baby skin is one of the most photogenic combinations we shoot. Let them go wild.
